Glass end-markets in the mid-Atlantic region have been problematic for years. Beginning in 2019 jurisdictions in Northern Virginia have begun to migrate away from curbside single stream collections of glass to source-separated collections via drop-off centers. Our speaker will share insights and results from the area’s transition to the “Purple Bin” glass recycling program. This model can be used in all types of communities and the presenter will share how they established the program, grew from no separate glass collection, to over 40 purple glass only bins in Northern Virginia.  To date, they have collected over 24 million pounds of clean, container glass for recycling.  As the program grew, they have been able to go from processing the glass for aggregates used in county projects to true glass to glass recycling, all the while reducing contamination in the county’s single stream recycling program.
