Today (November 15) is America Recycles Day® (ARD) and we are proud to once again support the program! ARD, which occurs annually, encourages individuals, organizations and other groups to host or participate in local recycling community events as well as take the #BeRecycled pledge.

This year is especially exciting in light of the recent positive growth in certain recycling markets, as well as the passage of Maryland’s market recycling development legislation and more. Check out these reasons to celebrate!

Positive growth: The Northeast Recycling Council published its 10th quarterly report showing significant growth between July and September in most commodities processed in materials recovery facilities across 10 northeast states. This is particularly good news after several years of a downturn following China’s ban on the imports of many recycled materials. Be sure also to check out this September article by Chaz Miller on the uptick and what’s next.

MD Recycling Market Development: In addition to the good news on current market growth, the passage of HB 164/SB116, Department of the Environment – Office of Recycling – Recycling Market Development legislation has been hailed as a positive step towards creating a vibrant recycling economy in Maryland by facilitating business growth, making recycling economically viable and protecting our natural resources. We have been a strong supporter of the legislation and worked intensively with the sponsors of the bill to ensure its passage. Learn more about MRN's legislative efforts.

National Recycling Strategy: Just today, the EPA released the first part of a series of strategies seeking to build a circular economy that works for us all. Today’s release focuses on the challenges the the U.S. municipal solid waste recycling system faces and identifies actions that can be taken to secure a more resilient and cost-efficient system.

Finally, we are thrilled to be celebrating our 30th Anniversary! Since we began in 1991 as the Maryland Recyclers Coalition (MRC), we have been – and continue to be – a resource and leading voice for recyclers in Maryland through education programs, advocacy activities to affect public policy, technical assistance efforts, and the development of markets to purchase recycled materials and manufacture products with recycled content. In the next few months, we’ll be talking with members as we revisit the past, celebrate the present, and look towards the future. Stay tuned for more plus details of a special in-person celebration coming in 2022!
