Montgomery County Project Selected for U.S. DOE Funding

Published on 1/9/2025

A Montgomery County, MD feasibility study into using wastewater residuals as fuel for county busses has been awarded funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The funding program was established to support local waste-to-energy initiatives aimed at meeting transportation energy needs.

The Montgomery County initiative, titled Food to Fuel: Food to Fuel: Exploring the Feasibility of Recycling Wasted Food to Power Montgomery County’s Bus Fleet, will assess the potential and technical feasibility of converting wastewater residuals into hydrogen to fuel the County's regional bus fleet. Additionally, the project will conduct a siting analysis for an in-county organics processing facility.

The DOE selected nine projects across six states for funding created to assist local communities in planning and developing waste-to-energy solutions for their waste streams. These projects will also help mitigate other challenges associated with waste collection and landfilling, such as heavy vehicle traffic, odors, and litter.
