Recycled Glass: Trash or Treasure?

Being both expensive to ship and of relatively low value compared to aluminum for example, glass has been a difficult material for recycling programs to manage. Join us at Noon on Tuesday, July 25 to learn about some options that may work for your locality.

Fairfax County’s Purple Bin Program
In 2019, Fairfax County stopped accepting glass in their single stream recycling program, requesting that residents reuse glass containers, bring them to purple, glass-only recycling containers located throughout the region or as a last resort, place them in the trash. In addition to a major reduction in contamination, the Purple Bin program produced a higher level of participation than expected. Susan Davidson, Business Operations Manager for Fairfax County’s Solid Waste Management Program will walk us through the steps taken to make the shift and the results generated.

Pozzotive®

Urban Mining’s Pozzotive® can use virtually all available waste glass as it does not require color segregation, ceramic removal, and a minimum cullet size. The process also has a proven solution for previously unusable recycled CRT panel glass, window glass and porcelain ceramic fixtures. Patrick Grasso, senior partner at Urban Mining Industries will outline the Pozzotive® process, where and how this low-carbon, high-performance material is being used today, it and share the company’s plans for a Mid Atlantic presence, thus offering a local, circular economy option for glass processing
