On June 2, MRN and the SWANA Mid-Atlantic Chapter Committee delivered another outstanding conference, bringing together recycling and solid waste professionals from across Maryland. This year’s theme,
The Road Ahead—Charting Your Course for the Next Generation in Recycling and Waste Management, highlighted how today’s decisions are shaping the future of the industry—and how professionals can help create the solutions of tomorrow.
From cutting-edge innovations to practical, real-world solutions, the conference offered something for everyone. Attendees had ample opportunities to connect with peers , explore a dynamic
vendor showcase, and leave with valuable insights and fresh inspiration.
SESSIONS: The general sessions framed the day with insights into the forces shaping recycling and solid waste management. The program opened with a timely overview of the Mid-Atlantic economy, highlighting ongoing uncertainty and areas where professionals can find stability as they plan ahead. After lunch, attendees received an update on legislative and regulatory policies, providing context on recent developments and what lies ahead for recycling and solid waste programs. The day concluded with a forward-looking session on how AI is transforming recycling—from enhancing outreach and education to enabling more effective material capture and recovery.
Throughout the day, attendees choose from eight breakout session which took a closer look at the real challenges and opportunities shaping recycling and solid waste management today by exploring everything from changing recycling markets and specialized waste streams to creative reuse programs and new possibilities for older landfill sites. Conversations also touched on the growing impact of policy, stewardship programs, and environmental justice tools like MDEnviroScreen, as well as emerging topics such as paint stewardship and mixed-waste processing.

MRN LEADERSHIP AND AWARDS: During the lunch session, MRN members in attendance voted for the
2026-27 Board of Directors electing
Michele Blair as president,
Rebecca Culler as vice president and
Tony Drury as secretary/treasurer. This year’s election included 10 directors with three new members joining the board. Seven directors will continue into the second year of their terms, providing continuity and experience.

The highlight of the lunch session was the presentation of the
Maryland Recycling Network's 2026 Extraordinary Achievement Award to
Kitty McIlroy, a dedicated volunteer and longtime champion of recycling in Maryland.
Throughout her professional career and as President of MRN for the past three years, Kitty has demonstrated the leadership, expertise, and dedication that make her a highly deserving recipient of this award.
