On April 28, Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed
SB 553 /
HB 833, officially reestablishing the
Commission to Advance Lithium-Ion Battery Safety and reaffirming Maryland’s commitment to safer, smarter energy solutions.
MRN President
Kitty McIlroy (left of the Governor) attended the bill signing alongside fellow members of the Battery Commission and partners from the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), marking an important moment for the Commission’s work.
MRN
supported the legislation noting that although the Commission’s 2025 Final Report offered strong recommendations, additional research is still needed on battery risks, insurance impacts, waste classifications, upcoming federal standards, and the inclusion of more subject matter experts.
Kitty has been actively involved in the Commission’s efforts, helping to advance thoughtful policies that address battery safety while supporting innovation and responsible energy use statewide. The reestablishment of the Commission represents a significant step forward for public safety, collaboration, and long-term energy planning across Maryland.
A special thank you to
Senator Malcolm Augustine and
Delegate Regina Boyce for sponsoring this legislation.
